STRESS

Stress-one of the major problems of the recent years- became a part of life with the COVID-19 pandemic. So what can we do to cope with stress? Although methods we can use to relax vary from person to person, walking in green spaces and outdoor settings, listening to soothing music, watching what you like and dancing are some of general stress relievers. It is possible to deal with stress through meditation, yoga and even certain foods, but unfortunately we sometimes notice those who try to manage their stress by sleeping much longer and changing eating habits. Although the solution varies from person to person, you should keep in your mind that awareness and getting professional support are highly important to cope with stress.

Melatonin Levels

Stress affects your sleep quality and time, and yet, poor sleep quality affects the stress level as well.

Melatonin, also known as sleep hormone, is a natural hormone that regulates the body’s circadian rhythm or sleep-wake cycle. Melatonin level increases at dusk to prepare you for sleep and starts to decline with the first lights of the day. Studies conducted for individuals with sleep disorder indicated that individuals who were given melatonin support fell asleep earlier than those who got the placebo and their stress levels reduced significantly. We recommend natural sources of melatonin including fruits and vegetables like tomato, cucumber, broccoli, corn, cherry, pomegranate and grape, oil seeds like walnut, flaxseed, peanut and rice, rolled oat and barley flakes.

Sources of Vitamin B are effective

Vitamin B plays an important role in energy metabolism in the body. Vitamin B deficiency is manifested by fatigue, tiredness and poor performance. It is important to analyze Vitamin B level during routine follow-ups to be made on an annual basis. Particularly cereals, meats, legumes, egg, dairy products and green leafy vegetables are source of Vitamin B. Vitamin B plays an important and positive role in both physical and mental health. In a study that focused on people who have job stress, it was observed that the level of job stress including depression, bad temper and tiredness reduced in those, who were given Vitamin B supplement and nutrition plan rich in Vitamin B (compared to others). Especially Vitamin B6 helps secretion of serotonin, also known as happiness hormone, and thus the level of stress you feel is reduced.

Do not forget that you can maintain your mental health as much as your physical health through certain precautions to be taken under supervision of a doctor.
