Mommy Makeover (Torsoplasty)

Mommy Makeover (Torsoplasty)

Correction of pregnancy and childbirth related deformations of the female body ...

Correction of pregnancy and childbirth related deformations of the female body affecting the abdomen, breasts, waist and sometimes the butt in a single session is referred to as Mommy Makeover (Torsoplasty). Even though tummy tuck and breast surgery may seem two different procedures, the abdomen, waist and breasts make up a single unit in aesthetic terms. If surgery is performed in only one of these parts, the deformation of the other parts may become even more distinct.

Torsoplasty is the sculpting of the breasts, abdomen and waist area in a single surgical session. The breasts are reduced, lifted or augmented. Liposuction, a mini tummy tuck or full tummy tuck is applied to the abdomen depending on the patient’s needs. The waist is recontoured. Fat deposits on the back can be removed with liposuction, and if necessary, fat can be transferred to sculpt the butt. Childbirth and breastfeeding have several effects on the body: the abdominal wall loosens, abdominal skin becomes saggy, fat accumulates in the belly and waist area, breasts get larger and lose their shape. Aging and extreme weight loss / weight gain may also have similar consequences.

Problematic parts of patients are always individual in nature. The procedure may involve breast reduction, breast lift or breast augmentation with implants. The abdomen may be sculpted with full tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck or just liposuction. Liposuction can be used also to sculpt the waist. Depending on the patient, the waist curve can be made more prominent, and fat can be transferred to augment the butt.

Combined surgical procedures can be risky in severely overweight patients. Therefore, patients should reduce their weight to a level they will be able to maintain permanently before they undergo surgery.

The most feared complication in this type of combination surgery is bleeding and pulmonary embolism. The risk increases with age, and is aggravated by severe overweight, diabetes and heavy smoking. Severely overweight patients are therefore advised to lose weight before surgery. Another problem is excessive skin excision and delayed wound healing. Factors that can aggravate these problems are improper planning before surgery, excessive skin removal, poor bleeding control, and smoking. Also, it may happen that serum accumulates under the skin a few weeks after surgery, in which case serum needs be discharged with a syringe. Problems such as excessive scarring may occur if the abdomen is closed too tightly or depending on the skin type, which can however be revised a year later under local anesthesia if scarring has occurred due to the abdomen closed too tightly.

Patient health always overrules any aesthetic concerns. Hence, combined surgeries are not advised for persons with severe overweight, advanced age, other health problems, diabetes, or heavy smoking habits. These persons must first improve their current condition before they can undergo surgery. In cases where combined surgery comes with risks, breast and abdominal surgery can be done in separate sessions.

This holistic approach to solve problems of the breasts, belly and waist area in a single session gives the patient a whole new appearance. It helps the patient gain self-confidence and improve their stance towards life. Also, it is more cost-effective to have multiple surgeries all at once instead of having several successive surgeries.
