Breast Augmentation

Breasts have always been a significant criterion for beauty.

Breasts have always been a significant criterion for beauty. They have a major effect on physical proportions, but it also affects choice of clothes and self-confidence. Disproportional breasts relative to height, shoulder width and hips or too small breasts may cause low self-esteem and social discomfort. These problems can be easily overcome with augmentation mammoplasty (breast augmentation) thanks to recent developments in aesthetic procedures. Breasts can be modified to optimal size with life-long lasting silicone implants or even, they can be reconstructed to look more supple and firm upon one’s request. Many women, who are not satisfied with their breasts, find a happier life through mammoplasty surgeries.

Who are Candidates for Breast Augmentation?

Every woman over the age of 18, who are not happy with their breast size and who do not have major health problems, may undergo breast augmentation surgery. Breast augmentation is also an option for women, who think their breasts are too small and wish for larger and eye-catching breasts, if they are not pregnant or lactating. Breast augmentation surgery does not pose threat to pregnancy or breastfeeding in future life. Lactating women can undergo mammoplasty three months after breastfeeding is stopped.

Women with small breasts due to hereditary factors can undergo breast augmentation surgery. Small breasts are almost completely caused by hereditary factors unless a hormonal condition is detected; it is a physical issue and breasts can be enlarged with breast augmentation surgery.
Breast augmentation is a good solution for volume loss or loss of breast tissue following breastfeeding; thus, breast aesthetics may restore pre-pregnancy ampleness and volume.
Asymmetry and one breast smaller than the other are deemed normal. However, the asymmetry is too remarkable in some women.  In such cases, breast augmentation surgery can be performed on the smaller breast. Or, silicone implants of different sizes may be placed in each breast to enlarge both breasts and achieve symmetry.
“Tubular Breast Deformity” is a special developmental abnormality of breasts. It is characterized by underdevelopment of mammary tissue in the lower half of breasts and the condition can be corrected with breast augmentation surgery.
Breast implant does not hinder breastfeeding. Thus, breast implant will not cause problems later in life in case of pregnancy.  It can be safely implanted after the age of 18.
How is breast augmentation surgery performed?

Goal of aesthetic surgeries is to gain the most natural look and almost optimal proportions. The same principle applies to breast augmentation surgery.

Breast augmentation surgeries are performed under general anesthesia at inpatient settings.

The surgical site is incised by 4 to 5 cm in order to insert the breast implant. The incision may be made on the inframmary fold, the lower margin of the areola or armpits.

Breast implant is placed behind the breast tissue or the pectoral muscle through the incision. Next, the incision is stitched and closed. Incision scar does not completely disappear but it is a very small one and gradually becomes barely visible.

Silicone breast implants vary in terms of filling materials. The ideal implant is decided depending on patient’s condition and breast tissue under the surgeon’s guidance.

Breast augmentation surgeries last 1 to 2 hours on average.

How is patient prepared for breast augmentation surgery ?

Patient discusses preferences about size, firmness and the look of breasts with plastic surgeon before breast augmentation surgery. Your surgeon will examine your breast structure to offer best options of surgical techniques for you.

If you smoke, you are advised to quit before the surgery. Moreover, you should inform your physician regarding all medications you take during the discussion. If the medications include blood thinners or pain-killers, your physician may ask you to stop them before the surgery. You should stop eating and drinking as of the midnight before the surgery as a crucial prevention for complications that may occur during general anesthesia.

What are outcomes of breast augmentation surgery ?

Breast augmentation changes may increase your self-esteem by modifying size and shape of your breasts. Weight gain or loss after the surgery may affect how your breasts look.
